The Clash were an English rock band that formed in 1976 as part of the original wave of British punk rock. They also experimented with reggae, ska, dub, funk, rap, dance and rockabilly. The September 21st 1979 show was part of the "Clash Take the Fifth" US tour, at the height of punk and new wave music. The picture from the cover was later voted the best rock and roll photograph of all time. The photographer felt the picture was slightly out-of-focus (since she was moving backwards to avoid getting hit by guitar debris) and that it wasn't good enough for the album cover. Lead vocalist/ guitarist Joe Strummer convinced her to use the shot. The broken remains of Simonon's bass are in the permanent collection of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
